The Downtown Greens Garden Shed project was funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The pavilion was designed to accommodate the activities of the volunteer organic gardeners at their Upper Garden Site in downtown Fredericksburg.
The project features a curved vegetated green roof covered with 3” of growing medium and a variety of locally grown sedums and other native species. The wood for the project came from reclaimed urban waste trees and certified under the Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood program. The post and beam frame was prepared by Amish craftsmen in Pennsylvania, shipped to the site as a kit of parts, and assembled by volunteers.
Non-load bearing straw bale walls sitting atop of a foundation wall made of broken up concrete sidewalk creates a modest enclosure underneath the curved living roof.
The Garden Shed was featured on the Richmond, Virginia PBS - WCVE program 'Virginia Home Grown.'
