One of the greatest things about living in Charlottesville is the community wide focus on sustainability. Over at the Blue Ridge Eco-Shop on Preston Avenue, you can pick up a rain barrel as well as recycled Rebinders for the home office. We have a Buy Fresh Buy Local program and a terrific seasonal farmer’s market. The City of Charlottesville is also doing a fantastic job with its green roof atop City Hall, the McIntire Recycling Center, and other efforts too numerous to list.
One recent effort, however, stands out. The city has received a grant from the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance to create the Local Energy Alliance Program, or LEAP for short. The program is bringing together building owners, financial institutions, contractors, local government and utilities to make Charlottesville a truly sustainable city. The first step is to perform an energy and water use audit in order to provide the owner with a list of recommendations.

In an effort to promote this critical first step, I’m putting the LEAP executive director’s business card up on the blog page along with a link to the website: http://www.leap-va.org. The executive director, Cynthia Adams, is doing a terrific job transforming some of Charlottesville’s least efficient properties. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a local hero; thanks Cynthia! Please help me spread the word in promoting the LEAP program’s admirable goals!
